Most plants do best if the soil is allowed to partially dry out between waterings. A loss of shine or footprints remaining after you walk across the lawn indicates that it's time to water. Vegetables and other annuals should be watered at the first sign of wilting, but tougher perennials (plants that live several years) need water only if they stay droopy after it cools off in the evening.

To reduce ink use and save money, the University of Wisconsin Green Bay's IT department has changed the default font for Outlook to Century Gothic, which it says requires 30% less ink in printouts than Arial, the most commonly used default font. Ink accounts for about 60% of the cost of a printed page, the IT unit says.

Run your dishwasher during off-peak times (after 8 p.m.).
Choose the light wash setting, which uses less water and runs for less time. Air dry your dishes instead of using the heat drying option and only run full dishwasher loads. Don't rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher - scrape the food into the garbage.

Recycling a ton of 'waste' has twice the economic impact of burying it in the ground. In addition, recycling one additional ton of waste will pay $101 more in salaries and wages, produce $275 more in goods and services, and generate $135 more in sales than disposing of it in a landfill.
